What is the default gateway for?

The default gateway is used to route traffic from a local network to destinations outside of it, such as the internet or other remote networks. When a device needs to send data to an IP address that is not on its local subnet, it forwards the packets to the default gateway, which then routes them toward their destination. Without a default gateway, a device can only communicate with other devices on the same local network segment.

Is 0.0.0.0 the default gateway?

0.0.0.0 is not a real default gateway IP. In routing tables, 0.0.0.0/0 represents the default route—a catch-all route that matches any destination address. However, the actual default gateway depends on the network configuration. Other common gateway addresses include 192.168.0.1, 10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.138, 192.168.1.254, and 172.16.0.1. Your gateway can be any address within the local subnet that the network administrator assigns.

Why is the default gateway used?

The default gateway is used because devices on a local network cannot directly communicate with devices on remote networks.
